Hi, I'm Ted. I'm a graphic designer, collector of vintage signs and Hot Wheels "redline" toy cars, and salvage/scrap enthusiast. I have a life-long love affair with design. The first word I learned to spell was "STOP." Needless to say I owe my love of color, shape, and especially fonts to traffic engineers everywhere, plus my parents for encouraging this strange yet innocent obsession.
My time in New Orleans gave me an appreciation for architecture. Since Katrina hit in 2005, many of these gems have been saved, repurposed or, if too far gone, demolished. Mobile and Birmingham both have a rich architectural history, as well, so my interest in saving bits and bobs from old places has increased over the years. My goal is to keep good stuff out of landfills and save our industrial past one piece at a time.
What is Shive?
Shive (rhymes with thrive) is New Orleans slang for something cool. I wanted to adopt an appropriate name for my design work and passion for everything vintage. And nothing is more shive than clean, functional design, a vintage sign, a weather-battered wood panel door, or the patina that brass hinges acquire after holding that door up for 50+ years. You dig?
Shive Design Sign & Salvage was a storefront I opened with good friend, Birmingham entrepreneur, and real estate investor, Kyle Kruse. Located in the heart of Birmingham's Historic Theatre District, Shive DSS featured vintage signs, salvaged bits & bobs, mid-century furniture and other home decor. It was a blast, and although it only was open for 8 months, it left an impression on many folks who still remind me everyday why it was a wonderful experiment. Shive DSS lives on with the occasion pop-up sale and new weekly eBay listings: search seller name shivedesign.
